    Dual SMP and affinity changer

Post by catawalks on Tue Dec 21, 2010 11:29 am

Feature Name: Dual SMP with affinity changer

What does this feature do: Allows users to run multiple SMP instances and have FAH Tracker automatically set the affinity of each FAHcore to a certain CPU core(s).

Why would this feature be useful to be include in the tracker: As more advanced hardware is being released and more powerful hardware is dropping in price, more and more people are running dual CPU Xeon systems or the like. This feature would allow for a user to setup a second SMP instance to run if dual sockets are detected or set by the user as an option. A single dual-Xeon E5620 system should be able to process two SMP units simultaneously as quickly as two separate stock i7 920 systems. I'm sure it's not a 100% increase but there would be gains. This is just a small example though as hexacore Xeon systems become cheaper and more prevalent.

Just a thought. And thanks for the work so far. This program has made it so much easier to stay in the folding scene and even to bring more people into it. Kudos and keep up the great work.

As set up the Tracker uses and assigns all the Machine IDs. This is why the screen looks like it does. So this wouldn't really be possible without a major modification. With that much power though why wouldn't you run BigAdv?

Running multiple SMP instances is pointless with the A3 core and bonus points. Since bonus points are based on the time it takes to return a WU, running 2 instances will result in less PPD and be less useful to the FAH project as a whole. Because of this, this feature will never be added to the Tracker.
